Argentinian bassist Fernando Huergo advances Latin jazz on new record label
By JEAN BELOVICFernando Huergo has become a trusted creative force and producer on Blue Music Group, the latest comer on the jazz record label scene. He appears on a total of thirteen albums, including his own Living These Times. Huergo was born in Córdoba, Argentina, but found his home in Boston nearly twenty years ago. Since then he has been one of the most hired performers in his specialty, the electric bass and Latin jazz. He has also recorded for Sunnyside Records and the Fresh Sound/New Talent label as leader.
Living These Times is a 1998 effort featuring an all-star team, including his long-time collaborators, Los Angeles-based Brazilian vocalist and now Verve Music Group recording artist, Luciana Souza, saxophonists Jacques Schwarz-Bart and Ole Mathisen. The music is predominantly Brazilian jazz, including some fusion influences, which Huergo and his band execute with groove, warmth and compassion. The 10-track disc is especially compared to Huergo's more recent recordings of Argentinian character a work of youth and strong development. But it does give a promise of a headline artist. His maturity is clearly demonstrated on his most recent recording, "Provinciano" (Sunnyside, 2008). However, when appearing as sideman, whether on Blue Music Group or other labels, Huergo's talents are unfortunately nearly unnoticeable as he clear-voyantly executes his bass, or base, to the benefit of the leader as a consummate and supportive professional with no attempt for attention as a soloist. Huergo has performed in the bands of Marta Gómez, Julio Santillán and Guillermo Klein for many years. His other credits include professorship at Boston's famed Berklee College of Music.
